Intro To MapWindow GIS III – Shapefile Editing

Third in the MapWindow screencast series is a quick runthrough of MapWindow’s shapefile editing capabilities. I think it’s one of the easiest to use of all the freeware GIS programs I’ve seen.

Among its capabilities are:

  • Simple addition of shapefile layer to project
  • Easy addition and removal of shapes within layer
  • One-click vertex addition, removal and moving
  • “Snap” to vertices in the same layer or all layers, helpful in getting shapes to match up with each other
  • Ability to enter vertices either by clicking on the map, or entering geographical vertex coordinates into a text box
  • Convenient attribute table editor

Two screencasts follow:

You can’t download the videos (a limitation of Revver).

Arcview has an extension to convert polygons to points. I wonder if Map Window can accomplish this task? Excellent tutorials and I hope to see more on this free GIS. Thanks!
