Thanks for providing this goldmine of information. I just want to point out that Mapcenter2 has been offline for several months and going by comments by the author that he has ceased development it seems unlikely that it will ever be available again.

Thanks, Charlie – I hadn’t seen that one before. I’ve got a post coming up on TYP tools, and I’ll add it there. Also found your OSMGenerate utility, and I’ll add that to my upcoming lists of OSM Garmin tools, along with a link to your page with tutorials and tips on creating OSM Garmin maps.

If you want to make TYPs (and you speak French, or can make educated guesses) have a try with TYPViewer:

Thanks for your comment. I’ll be covering mkgmap and associated tools in upcoming posts. For me, the one big advantage that cgpsmapper has over mkgmap is its ability to create custom TYP files.

I disagree with your closing comment: “There are a few other free compilers for Garmin maps, and I’ll cover them in future posts as well, but none of them have the feature set, or power, of the free version of cgpsmapper; if you want to make your own Garmin maps, you must get a copy of at least the free version of cgpsmapper.”

mkgmap makes Garmin maps that have the same features as cgpsmapper (as far as I know), and it can take the free and ever-more-detailed OpenStreetMap database as input, so no messing around with MP files.
