Social Placemarking With TagCrumbs

Sascha Konietzke writes to announce a new social web service he has cofounded, TagCrumbs. With TagCrumbs, you can create a geographic placemark for a location of interest, adding text data and links as desired. Browsing through the site brings up a wide variety of locations, from tourist spots to a good 3 AM Parisian restaurant to a spot where a smoke alarm went off (with the story behind it). The location is plotted on the same page with Google Maps, latitude/longitude given, and links to geotagged photos from the same area from Panoramio are included; other nearby TagCrumbs are also listed. You can also set a location anywhere in the world, and see if there are any TagCrumbs near there.

As with other social sites, you can have friends and fans, and see their lists of TagCrumbs. And as with any social site, how useful it will be for you will depend on how many members it has. Right now, TagCrumb coverage in the US is spotty; Europe is better. I’m not that big on social sites (as a glance at my Facebook page will reveal), but if you are, TagCrumbs might be worth a look.

Another service in the same/similar category is http://www.geopepper.com which is from Alcatel-Lucent and for mobile phones. It is supposed to be based on a service they call Geographic Messaging Service (GMS). Haven’t test it yet myself.

    Cheers
