The newer Garmin 60CSx models use a Mediatek chipset; there's some discussion of that here:

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=228100

No formal comparison yet of Sirfstar 60CSx vs. Mediatek 60CSx that I've been able to find.

Great set of articles. It looks like your comparison is with the original Garmin 60Cx/CSx which use the Sirf Star 3 chipset. I understand the new Garmin 60CSx uses a different chipset. I wonder how the new Garmin chipset would compare with the Sirf Star 3 chipset?

Sincerely,
Bill

Thanks for both replies, appreciate them. I think I will wait until your post on the netbook is available. It would like to have one with Ozi, a GPS, GSAK, Google Earth and Mapsource! I really (really) like TTQV, but the complete version is too expensive, so I am leaving it out of this wish list.

Any brand/model with better visibility/screen that you are aware of?

Depends on your needs; if raster maps matter, a Triton would be a good choice, if not then the Garmins are probably better.

Coincidentally, I'm working on a series of posts on creating a portable GIS/GPS workstation using a netbook. Visibility in full sunlight is definitely a problem, but I've found several unusual ways to make the screen readable under those conditions, even if it's not ideal.

Leszek, thanks, I really enjoyed the two parts review of the Triton. Great job. I am curious about the ability to use raster maps on this receiver. You said it is a fantastic feature, so I bet it is really a good feature! I have a 60CSx and still own an old Etrex as backup. Do you think the Triton would fit the backup role if I retire the Etrex from service? I am also considering using one of those new small laptops (those little laptops I see now everywhere, sorry I know little about them) but I am not sure if they are able to run a software like Fugawi, TTQV or OziExplorer. Have you tested those minilaptops?

Kind regards,
Kesh
