Hi, thanks for this nice review series.

I am not sure if this is the right place, but I recently discovered
a nice site, much like the locr site, but more focused on country
information and travelling. I think it feels nicer, so I just wanted
to share it with you...

http://www.photrax.com

Best,

Thanks, Jules. I don't expect to cover too many Linux tools here, except for the cases where there are versions of the utilities that run on both Windows and Linux. I do far more work in Windows than Linux, so I've built up a far larger set of free Windows tools than Linux tools to write about.

I think you're right about Picasa having the problem here - the location tags are pretty simple and consistent, but Picasa seems to be rejecting them all out of hand just because it has a problem with the GPSVersionID tag, which doesn't affect the location representation. I've just posted a small GUI for EXIFTool that will automatically modify that tag for all the JPGs in a folder, so that Picasa will accept the geodata embedded by locr and a few other programs.

Hi, thanks for these continuing, useful reviews.

I don't know whether you plan to cover this or not but I thought I would just remind you that the free tool digiKam for Linux supports geotagging and uses either a GPX file or manually via Google Maps. It also fully supports editing IPTC tags - something not often well supported on Windows based tools.

This also seems to create meta information that isn't recognised by Picassa so it seems that perhaps it is Picassa at fault here - it's meta handling seems to be far too simplistic for serious use.

Regards,
Jules.
