We also found that when we upgraded from ArcGIS 9.1 to 9.2, the non-beta (i.e., previous) version will not see ArcGIS at all. We also found that saving directly to a geodatabase no longer works in this beta, but with ArcGIS 9.2, the file (and not personal) geodatabase was introduced and is perhaps more standard, so maybe this is related to the new format.
